Howard "Sluggo" Hood, III, a beloved member of the Franklin community, passed away on September 10, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born on May 18, 1946, in Franklin, Tennessee to the late Howard Jr. and Frances Jefferson Hood. He lived his life dedicated to family, service, and laughter. Known for his vibrant personality, he was always keeping those around him laughing.
He had a successful career in his early years as the owner and operator of Hoods Construction, later retiring from the Williamson County Highway Department. His contributions weren't limited to his work life; he served his Lord as a member of Cowles Chapel UMC and was a valued 50-year member of the Bethesda Masonic Lodge #201. Sluggo fulfilled his duty to his country by serving in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed activities such as racing, cheering for the UT Vols and Atlanta Braves, watching westerns, and enjoying hunting and fishing.
Hoods Construction prepared the grounds for many of the softball fields around Franklin and local schools. As a devoted family man, he spent countless hours on the softball fields watching his daughters, Shannon (Tim) Pope, Shelly Hood, and Sherrie (Chris) Totty. His love for his family extended to his brother, David (Cindy) Hood, his sister, Debbie (Mike) Hobgood, niece, nephews, cousins, and the mother of his children, Wanda Hood.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation, which will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 4 - 8:00 PM at Franklin Community of Faith Church located at 506 Jordan Rd. Franklin, TN 37067. A masonic service will be held at 6:30PM on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2025 with visitation one-hour prior at the Franklin Community of Faith Church, with Bro. Earl Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Williamson Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Marlin, Gene Reed, Todd Marlin, David Reed, David Stephens, and Paul Tomlin. Honorary pallbearers are Gordon Harper, Ricky Smithson, Bobby Plunkett, Eddie Hood, Sheila Reed, Trey Vaughn, Larry Giles, Tootie Jefferson, Richard Jefferson, members of Cowles Chapel, Bethesda Masonic Lodge, and employees of Williamson County Highway Department.
